Holiday Etiquette: Holiday Tipping

Holiday tipping begins with you.  The reason for holiday tipping is to show your appreciation and gratitude for the work that has been done during the year.  It also benefits you in return because when people feel appreciated they are more likely to go the extra mile to help you.  So, if little Billy has been a troublemaker in school, you might consider tipping his teacher to thank him/her for doing their best with your child.  Cash or gift cards are always acceptable.  However, if you do not have the economic means to tip in this manner, you can also give baked goods or a simple thank you note.  The goal is to show your gratitude.

When deciding whether or not to tip someone, you should consider the service you receive from them and whether or not you have a relationship or rapport with them.  You probably spend more time talking to your hair stylist than you do the garbage collector.  Tipping is not mandatory, but is a way to say thank you for all you do for me during the year.  The guidelines below are presented as a framework to help show you customary holiday tips.  Amount to tip varies depending on where you live, but for most service professionals, you should tip the value of one visit/session.

Tipping Guide

  •  Babysitter – One night’s pay plus a thank you note from your child.
  •  Garbage collector: $10 to $30 per collector.
  •  Gardener: $25-$50, or a week’s pay.
  •  Hair stylist: Cost of one session.
  •  Maid: A week’s pay if you have a good relationship with the individual.
  •  Mail carrier: They cannot accept cash gifts so a small gift worth less than $20 is acceptable.
  •  Manicurist: Cost of one session.
  •  Newspaper delivery person: $10 — $25 depending on amount of deliveries (weekly/weekend).
  •  Personal trainer: Cost of one session.
  •  Pet sitter/Dog walker: $10 — $25 depending on your relationship.
  •  Teacher: $25–100 – check with the school to see if they have limits.

Holiday Office Party Etiquette Do’s and Dont’s

With the holiday season upon us once again, the holiday office party is right around the corner.  Follow these steps to make a good impression on the higher-ups and your co-workers.

  • Dress appropriately.  It’s your office party, so it’s an extension of work.  Don’t dress for the clubs.
  • Confirm beforehand whether you can bring a guest.  No one wants to show up and be turned away.
  • Mingle.  Breakaway from your usual crowd and meet some other people.  This is a perfect chance to introduce yourself to the department heads of areas where you would like to move up to.
  • Do not overindulge.  Pigging out on the food and drinks will get you remembered for the wrong reasons.
  • Politeness goes a long way.  Remember to thank the host upon your arrival and tell them you had a wonderful time as you leave.  This will not only impress your host but also help your career because most holiday parties are hosted by upper management.
  • Remember that this is still a company function so any offensive behavior can have serious repercussions.   Don’t dance suggestively and whatever you do, don’t flirt with your co-workers.
